  • Participants -

This workshop is suitable for participants who have no previous knowledge or experience. They provide an opportunity to experience the fun and excitement of raku firing. The workshop is split into two half day sessions. On Day 1 you will be introduced to the raku process and then go on to make 2-3 pots using simple hand-building techniques. You return for the second session about two weeks later after your pots have been bisque-fired which makes them ready for you to glaze.

After you have glazed the pots they will be fired very quickly in the outdoor raku kiln to a temperature of about 1000°C, removed from the kiln red-hot, and smoked in a metal bin with newspaper and sawdust. After cooling and cleaning you will have your pots ready to take home. It should be noted though that raku ware is generally considered as 'art work' and not normally suitable for functional use. Organisation -

John Evans will be leading the workshop. His work using alternative raku techniques is widely known in the UK and articles about his techniques have featured in 'Ceramic Review','Craft and Design' magazine and international publications. On full days, the workshop hours are 10.00 am - 5.00 pm. Lunch is not included in the cost of this workshop.

    Accommodation -

We have one en-suite double room available in the house which can be booked by participants (£40 per night single; £50 double). Otherwise we are close to a range of budget and higher-end hotel and BnB options.

    Venue -

The workshop is close to Worthing town centre and the sea-front. There is a good range of accommodation and restaurant options close at hand. There is good road access from the A24, and regular rail connections to London Victoria, Gatwick and Southampton airports. We try to help with transport to/from local railway stations. If this isn't possible, taxis from Worthing Station are readily available - about £5.

We naturally hope for good weather so that most of the activities can take place outside but, in the event of inclement weather there is an undercover firing area for the raku kilns which usually means we can continue firing.

    Health & Safety -

This will be a major consideration and participants should bring appropriate clothing as all those attending are expected to participate in the firings by loading/unloading kilns and the reduction bins. PPE wear will be available to participants at the workshop. Eg Leather aprons, welders gloves, protective face-shields, raku tongs - but please bring your own if you have them. Disposable respiratory masks will be available for purchase.
The workshop may not be suitable for people who are significantly affected by smoke or fumes.

    1. Miscellaneous -

The price includes all materials used during the workshop.

Should you be unable to bring bisqued work suitable small pots and test-tiles can be purchased from the organisers subject to 8 weeks notice prior to the workshop. Full information for making and firing work to bring will be sent after booking.

The pottery is reasonably well equipped with tools and brushes for student use but please bring your own if you have them.
