  • Participants -

This 2 day workshop is intended for ceramicists who already have some experience of naked clay work or alternative firing techniques and can bring suitable bisqued ware with a burnished/terra sigged surface. The two day course will include ferric fuming in tin-foil saggars, making and firing a 'mummy'saggar, one-step naked raku and two-step naked raku techniques to gain some control over the smoke markings on your work. This is a short course so we will not be making any work and each participant would ideally bring suitable bisqued pieces - either sculptural or vessel forms. Information on this will be provided after booking. The focus will be on decorating and firing techniques. It is hoped that each participant will take home around 10 finished pieces. Most pieces should be of 'modest' size. Bisqued pieces will be available to purchase from the organisers if you are unable to bring your own.

    Organisation -

John Evans will be leading the workshop. His work using alternative raku techniques is widely known in the UK and articles about his techniques have featured in 'Ceramic Review','Craft and Design' magazine and international publications. On full days, the workshop hours are 10.00 am - 5.00 pm. A light lunch will be served during each full workshop day. COVID19 distancing restrictions may mean that this will be buffet style rather than served at the communal table.

    Venue -

The workshop is close to Worthing town centre and the sea-front. There is a good range of accommodation and restaurant options close at hand. There is good road access from the A24, and regular rail connections to London Victoria, Gatwick and Southampton airports. Taxis from Worthing Station are readily available.

    Health & Safety -

This will be a major consideration and participants should bring appropriate clothing as all those attending are expected to participate in the firings by loading/unloading kilns and the reduction bins. PPE wear will be available to participants at the workshop. Eg Leather aprons, welders gloves, protective face-shields, raku tongs - but please bring your own if you have them. Disposable respiratory masks will be available for purchase.
The workshop may not be suitable for people who are significantly affected by smoke or fumes.

    COVID19-

Compliance with UK COVID19 guidance and regulations means that, in order to achieve sufficient distance between participants preparing their work for firing and during discussions, we will be using large, heavy-duty outdoor gazebos rather than the more confined studio space. Each participant will have their own work-table and will not normally be facing other people. We will maximise air-flow through the gazebos when the weather allows so do be prepared for possible chilly weather. If personal circumstances allow we ask participants to wear a face-mask whilst near others.

The firing area for the raku kilns is undercover, but open to the elements at the sides. We can usually continue firing whatever the weather conditions.

    1. Miscellaneous -

The price includes all materials used during the workshop.

Should you be unable to bring bisqued work suitable small pots and test-tiles can be purchased from the organisers subject to 8 weeks notice prior to the workshop. Full information for making and firing work to bring will be sent after booking.

The pottery is reasonably well equipped with tools and brushes for student use but please bring your own if you have them.
