Conventional raku workshop courses, using glazes to provide decorative effects, are suitable for all levels, including beginners. 'Naked Clay and Naked Raku Workshops' are aimed at practising ceramicists and explore techniques suitable for the raku kiln where marks are made by smoke or other chemical fumes impregnating the clay body. Introductory courses will include burnishing techniques and using terra sigillata to provide surfaces ideal for 'naked clay' techniques. Workshops may include techniques such as glaze-resist raku (aka 'two-step naked raku); slip-resist raku (aka 'one-step naked raku'); horse-hair/feather raku; ferric fuming in tin-foil saggars; saggar firing in paper-slip saggars, pitfiring, indian smoke barrel firing, and fuming over glaze with ferric and stannous chlorides (Kosai). Courses using soluble chemical salts in low-firing techniques are suitable for the more advanced ceramicists.

Over 250 participants have attended the specialist workshops since 2008. They now take place at John's studio in Worthing, W. Sussex, UK and are each limited to 5 participants, ensuring maximum individual tuition but allowing all the benefits of group interaction. The workshop incorporates an undercover outdoor firing area to provide some protection in the the event of adverse weather. It is close to Worthing seafront and the Town Centre with regular direct rail access from London, Victoria and Gatwick Airport. A range of hotels and B&B are close at hand with some accommodation also sometimes available on site. John will often be assisted in the workshops by his partner, Janet Branscombe, and Californian raku artist Tom Peterson along with other specialist demonstrators.

COVID19 - we have risk assessed our entire operation and put into place significant changes to make the workshops as safe as possible for participants. The tuition sessions are now held semi-outdoors in a large open-ended marquee with each participant having their own 6 foot table, a personal box with all materials to minimise sharing and spaced out exterior work areas to allow a safe distance between participants. Firing is carried out within a roofed open-sided structure.
