Since 2008, over 300 participants from all over the UK as well as Canada, South America, and most European countries, have attended our specialist alternative firing workshops using outdoor raku kilns. They take place at John's studio in Worthing, W. Sussex, UK providing small-group tuition and the benefits of peer group interaction. It is close to Worthing seafront and the Town Centre with regular direct rail access from London, Victoria and Gatwick Airport. A large range of hotels and B&B are close at hand. See the participant testimonials below Tailored workshops for individuals or for groups can be arranged. These can be one or two days and can either be picked from our standard workshops or tailored to your needs. Click here for more information. Workshop techniques include glazed raku, copper matt, naked clay techniques such as horsehair/feather raku, obvara, naked raku using slips and glazes to focus the smoke markings, ferric fuming - using ferric chloride in foil saggars, flash firing, and the much-loved 'mummy' saggar technique. Most workshops require that participants bring their own bisqued work for use during the workshops. Alongside teaching participants the range of glazed and naked-clay techniques you could also learn how to get the best results through burnishing and making and using terra sigilatta. Most workshops require some level of working with clay but this can be very basic. Others are aimed at the more experienced practitioner. If you have a raku kiln, but are unsure how to fire it safely and effectively, you could consider coming on the popular one-day 'Raku Kiln Confidence Course'. Please contact us to arrange this. Workshop demonstrations and most of the 'indoor' work takes place in a marquee. The outdoor firing area is covered over to provide some protection in the event of adverse weather. John will often be assisted in the workshops by his partner, Janet Branscombe, and raku potters Tom Peterson, or Cabby Luxford.
